Storm report July 17th 2010

Mammatus clouds

Storm report July 17th 2010

Just before 5pm I was out walking across the fields near to Tardebigge when the weather changed from being bright and breezy to dark threatening skies, managed to take a few shots, I thought for one moment there’s rotation starting to occur which could be the start of a funnel cloud, if a funnel cloud touches the ground it becomes a tornado. Most tornadoes begin as funnel clouds, but many funnel clouds do not make ground contact and so do not become tornadoes however, the excitement was short lived especially when the heavens opened and I got drenched anyway it was good to observe. After returning home I checked the radar images and the conditions were showing favourable for possible tornado developments. The first image does show signs of rotation in the cell.

Mammatus clouds

The clouds within the image are called Mammatus clouds which are masses of cloud that hang beneath other clouds. They occur when cool, humid air descends into a warmer layer and causes the latter to cool to its dewpoint and condense into droplets. There not a common site here in the UK and are associated with particularly strong storms.
